Drag! is a simple, endless tower climbing game, except for one twist, the player does not control the ball, he controls the platforms. The game features minimal touch controls. You simply drag the red platforms. Drag is a perfectly casual, any time play game. It is a game meant for all age groups and can be enjoyed by literally anyone!

What went right

  • Time management went well for the project. The concept did not take too much time to brush up and finalize.

  • The core mechanic (Drag and Drop) worked very well for the touch devices we were targeting.

  • The art was very minimal and therefore wasn't too time consuming to create.

What went wrong

  • Balancing the game took a lot of time. Since the game was entirely procedural, the additional gameplay elements (spinning platforms, breakable platforms, etc.) needed to be introduced to the player at a steady pace on each playthrough. Programming this took some time.

What I Learnt

  • This project gave me a lot of experience for programming procedural generation, which is something I have learnt to appreciate thanks to this.

  • This also gave me a valuable lesson in designing games which followed the philosophy of "easy to learn, hard to master."

  • This game also taught me the importance of minimal control schemes and how to design complex systems for Touch-based input methods without making it too overwhelming for the players with various gestures.

Accomplishments

Drag! was selected to be a participant of the Very Big Indie Pitch at Pocket Gamers Connect Bangalore, 2016.
